What Is Coaching?
A personal coach is similar to an athletic coach. A good athletic coach takes a
player with talent and helps that player fine tune his or her athletic performance,
maximize it, and use it effectively. Sometimes a coach is able to take a player
of less than star quality and “create” a star, by helping the player to use his
or her full potential.
The work of a personal coach is the same. A coach will help you to use your own
talents, skills, and resources to accomplish your goal, whether to find a life partner,
improve the quality of your marriage or intimate partnership, become a better parent,
strengthen your business, or pursue career goals.
Although coaching may be therapeutic, coaching is different than psychotherapy.
Generally speaking, coaching is more direct, goal-oriented, and interactive than
traditional therapy. Your coach will ask challenging questions to help you gain clarity
about your goals and objectives. Then the coach will work with you to form an action
plan and to put that plan into effect. Your coach can also hold you accountable
to meet goals that you set for yourself and will continuously encourage you along
the way.
Therapy and coaching are complementary, and the work sometimes overlaps.
